A Chat with Lydia - Her journey from the classroom, to the boardroom, to your laptop

When I was little, I would line up my teddy bears and teach them. I thought it was the coolest job in the world! My teaching career began right out of college with Teach for America, an organization devoted to combating inequality in education. I was given the opportunity to teach for two years in Atlanta at the AD Williams Elementary School. This school served children who lived in the Bowen Homes housing projects. A lot of the kids I taught were surrounded by violence - sadly, a woman in Bowen Homes was shot the day I started.

The kids were incredibly bright, and just needed a chance. I put my heart into teaching the curriculum in a way that would speak to them. This meant incorporating things that introduced them to new things and another way of living.

Being a Teach for America Core Member was incredibly rewarding. But it was eye-opening and humbling to get an up-close look at the challenges faced by students in our country.

As a young adult, I longed to see more of the world and wanted to experience living abroad for a year. I - quite literally - spun a globe and landed on Japan! I taught English to adults and children at a conversation school in Yokohama, a suburb of Tokyo. I loved the way they approached education, and their overall hunger for learning.

When I moved back to the States, I started teaching communications to adults. I ran both the Communications and English departments for a private community college. I was stunned to see how things were managed for adult learners - the emphasis was on dollars, with little focus on learning outcomes. This sparked my own determination to ensure learners - particularly ones who are investing their hard-earned money - always have clear and meaningful takeaways.

I moved on to teaching adults remotely, but in the corporate world. I got deep into the behind-the-scenes of creating e-learning. I devoured info on different software programs, and the technology that goes into course creation. I became an expert on the client consultation piece, working through concepts, and figuring out exactly what was needed. This also meant serving as a liaison for SMEs, marketing teams, and the learners themselves. I found a way to streamline and perfect the process, making it smooth and easy for the client.  The rest is history.
